A2 Milk

What is A2 Milk?

Milk has long been a staple part of the traditional diet. The emergence of different milk types, such as lactose free or high protein milk, cater to more specific dietary preferences. A2 milk fits a niche in the market that has been previously unanswered. So what makes A2 milk different from the other milk options on the market? The main distinction is actually highlighted in the name. “A2” comes from the A2 beta-casein protein. Beta-casein makes up about 30 percent of the protein in cow’s milk. A1 and A2 are two variants of beta-casein. The difference between A2 milk and “regular” milk is that non-A2 milk contains both the A1 and A2 proteins where as A2 milk is exclusively from cows which do not produce the A1 protein and therefore is A1 protein free.

What are the benefits of A2 Milk?

The A1 and A2 proteins found in milk affect the body differently. A1 protein has been linked to symptoms similar to lactose intolerance, including stomach discomfort. This is due to the way in which the small intestine breaks down the A1 protein into BCM-7 which can be an irritant in some people. Some researchers believe that it is actually BCM-7, not lactose, which can cause digestion issues in individuals that have been diagnosed with lactose intolerance. The A2 protein, however, does not breakdown in BCM-7 and is actually more comparable to the protein found in sheep, goat, and buffalo milk (known for being more tummy-friendly). A 2016 study done on adults in China found that those with self-reported lactose intolerance did not experience digestive issues while drinking A2 milk but those drinking non-A2 milk did.
